Your First Labour Hire Job: What to Expect on Day One
By Amelia Micallef
Starting a
new job can be exciting, but it can also be a little nerve wracking and
overwhelming. Part of our role at Workforce Success is to guide candidates through
this entire process, to make the transition into your new role as seamless and
possible. This blog post will give you an idea of what to expect on your first
day in a labour hire role employed by Workforce Success.
1. 1. Before You Arrive: What to Bring &
Know
Documentation: Bring your ID, any required
certifications (e.g. White Card, forklift license), and your signed employment
paperwork.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Depending on the
role, you may need steel-capped boots, high-vis clothing, gloves, or a hard
hat. Confirm with your recruiter beforehand.
Arrival Time & Site Details: Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Punctuality makes a strong first impression. At Workforce Success our recruitment team make it a priority to meet you at the jobsite to show you where to go, introduce you to your supervisor and personally wish you luck. While we cannot always guarantee this, we are available over the phone for any questions or concerns you may have and site details, supervisor’s name and specific instructions will ALWAYS be communicated to you in the lead up to your first day.
2. 2. Orientation & Induction
Most labour hire placements begin with a site
induction, which may include:
- Safety
briefing and emergency procedures
- Introduction
to team leaders or supervisors
- Overview
of your tasks and responsibilities
- Tour
of the site or workspace
This is your chance to ask questions and clarify expectations, to ensure you have a complete understanding of the role and your tasks. It is also a chance for you to get to know your team and make a good impression.
3. 3. Common First-Day Tasks
Depending on your placement, you might be:
- Assisting
with manual labour or warehouse duties
- Operating
machinery (if certified)
- Supporting
tradespeople or technicians
- Handling
deliveries or stock
Don’t worry if it feels overwhelming, most roles start with simple tasks and build up as you gain confidence.
4. 4. End of Day
- Make sure to thank to your supervisor on the way out – building a friendly rapport is key to a good impression
- Ensure you have accurately recorded your hours, finalized your timesheet, and forwarded it to your recruiter
- Check in with us - we are eager to know how you got on and any feedback you may have to help us support you better
Top Tips for Success:
- Be proactive: Ask questions if you're unsure about a task, it’s always better to clarify than to guess and be wrong.

- Stay safe: Follow all safety protocols and report hazards immediately.
